Details for Brewer families on school closing, 3.16.2020

3.16.2020

Dear Brewer School Community,

We are entering into a 2-week shutdown of our schools, from 3.16.2020 to 3.27.2020. We will continually reassess this situation to determine when it is possible to reopen beyond the 27th. We will communicate with you as soon as we know if the closure has to be extended. Up to date information will be posted on our website at www.breweredu.org

Below is information on key areas. Remember that you can use the number 211 to get general information regarding the Coronavirus outbreak, and you can call our central office at 207-989-3160 if you have questions about the Brewer School Districtā€™s plan. This office will be open, but if you need an in-person meeting we ask that you call us first.

Sincerely,

Gregg Palmer, Superintendent of Schools

Food distribution center:  We will be hosting a breakfast and lunch pickup service for all Brewer school age students. This can include any person under the age of 18, or between 18 and 20 if they are still enrolled in public high school. The pickup will be at the front entrance of Brewer Community School (BCS). Service will be from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. daily starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Families should drive up and remain in their vehicle near the front doors of BCS. A staff member will hand both the lunch for that day and a breakfast for the next morning through the vehicleā€™s window. If possible, please have the student(s) receiving the meal with you in the vehicle. If you have a special need or circumstance please call us so we can help.

Picking up items left at school:  For these two weeks we are asking families to contact schools, or our central office, if they believe their student(s) have left essential items in a building. This includes medications, a warm coat, and other health related items that may have been left behind last week. It does not include musical instruments, books, school supplies, phones, or other items students can live without for the next two weeks. If an item is deemed to be essential, school personnel will retrieve it and bring it to our food distribution site at BCS when meals are being handed out.

Academics:  The district is providing ideas and resources for optional at-home activities that would help keep your student(s) engaged in learning. Go to this Suggested Activities for Home Learning link. This will not, at this point in time, be mandatory or part of any studentā€™s school program and will not be graded or incorporated into any part of a studentā€™s school record. This will be the case for the next two weeks of our school closure.

Building cleanliness:  Our custodians have been disinfecting both of our schools, but with the closure we will be engaging in an even deeper cleaning, similar to that completed over the summer months so when students are able to return full time our learning spaces will be as healthy and safe as is possible.

Contact Information:  If you need assistance please first call the central office (207-989-3160). This office will be open throughout the closure. You can also call our High School (207-989-4140) or Community School (207-404-5700) but they may have periods where they are not staffed to take phone calls. You can also email us:
